How Sleep Promotes Younger Looking Skin
You need at least eight to nine hours of sleep per night, depending on your age.
During this time, your body takes the opportunity to check around and heal itself wherever it deems necessary to do so. Most of the healing agents are carried via your bloodstream. Freshly oxygenated blood begins in your lungs and circulates around your entire body, passing through your heart on its way: There is a special fast-track circuit for your brain, and consequently your face, to receive oxygenated blood before any other body part.
It is important that there is good, steady blood flow entering and exiting your facial arterioles (tiny arteries), venules (tiny veins), and capillaries (tiny networks connecting arterioles and venules). Your face is one of the most exposed parts of your body, and during the day it can get incredibly dirty, especially if you wear makeup, or if you touch your face a lot. Natural oils produced by your skin, as well as extraneous dirt, seep into your pores, clogging them and making it harder for your face to shed dead skin cells, which can build up and cause certain types of acne and other facial blemishes.
Increased blood flow to the face at night helps speed the healing process if you’ve recently treated these blemishes. You should wash your face gently at night, and treat it if necessary, to rid it of the excess filth. As an extra precaution, you should also be sure that your bed linens, including your pillowcase, are clean.
One method that has been shown to increase blood flow during the night, thus keeping your face healthy and fresh for when you wake up the following morning, is the Earthing pillow. This product “bring[s] the human body in direct contact with the negative electric charge of the earth’s surface.” In a study conducted by the University of California at Irvine, Gaétan Chevalier demonstrated that, “even one-hour contact with the earth restores blood flow regulation to the face, suggesting enhanced skin tissue repair and improved facial appearance[…].” Give it a try and note the results for yourself!
